I chose Breast Surgery as my specialty because breast cancer patients are inspiring – they are beaming with hope for themselves, as well as for other breast cancer patients who may come after them. This means that patients join clinical trials, for example, and try to make breast cancer care better for the world. It’s extremely rewarding to care for such engaged, hopeful patients.
My approach to patient care is based on shared decision-making, meaning I do my best to explain everything in a way each patient can understand and be wholly involved in their treatment decisions.

The philosophical approach to breast cancer care is just one of many reasons that Dr. Holmes is held in high regard by the international breast surgery community for his role as a visionary leader and change agent. With over 50 peer-review medical journal publications of his innovative work and collaborations, Dr. Holmes has long experience with many breast cancer treatments that are still relatively new to most breast and general surgeons.

Frederieke van Duijnhoven is a surgical oncologist at The Netherlands Cancer Institute. She specialises in breast and thyroid cancer.
Her research focuses on de-escalation of local treatment, both following neoadjuvant systemic therapy and in patients with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ. She was one of the co-PIs in the MICRA trial, in which the accuracy of post-NST biopsies to detect pathologic complete response was assessed. She is a co-PI of the ongoing LORD trial, in which local treatment in patients with DCIS grade I or II is omitted as the majority of these lesions will not evolve into invasive carcinoma.
Since 2019 she is Secretary of the EORTC Breast Cancer Group and a member of the Working group for locoregional therapy. In collaboration with the Imaging Group of the EORTC, studies into the diagnostics and treatment of oligometastatic disease are being developed.

Duncan Wheatley is a Clinical Oncology Consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Cancer Centre in Truro. He specialises in Breast and Urological tumours.
He has been the Clinical Lead for cancer research in the very successful Peninsula area of the UK, sits on the NCRI Breast Clinical Studies Group and is R&D Director at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Exeter University.
He has been Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator on many studies and recruits all willing patients into as many studies as possible. He sits on the TMG for many studies and co-runs the FAST Forward Study.

Bruce Mann trained as a general surgeon in Melbourne and completed a surgical oncology Fellowship at Memorial Hospital in New York. His clinical practice has been exclusively focussed on breast cancer for the last 12 years. He was appointed Director of the Breast Service at Royal Melbourne and Royal Women’s Hospital in 2007, and Director of the Breast Tumour Stream of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in 2015. He is Director of Research at Breast Cancer Trials – Australia and New Zealand’s cooperative breast cancer clinical trials organisation. His interests relate to systems for optimal breast cancer care and research to improve early diagnosis and tailor the extent of breast cancer treatment to the individual patient.

Janine Simons is a resident in radiation oncology at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and a postdoctoral researcher. Her research focuses on the de-escalation of axillary management in patients with breast cancer who are treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. She was the coordinating investigator of the Dutch RISAS trial, in which the diagnostic accuracy of a procedure like the “targeted axillary dissection” was investigated. As part of her doctoral studies, she was a temporary research assistant at the department of Breast Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
She is now, amongst others, involved with the MINIMAX trial, a prospective registry trial to study the oncologic safety and quality of life associated with different axillary management strategies.

I am a consultant radiologist from the UK and have worked at the Nottingham Breast Institute for the last 20 years where we have a large symptomatic and screening practice, diagnosing around 750 breast cancers each year. Nottingham is one of the national training centres for the UK breast screening programme and I have been the director of education and training at the centre since 2016.
I am involved in clinically based research in both primary and advanced breast cancer, with over 50 peer reviewed publications. My most significant work has focused on Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM), radiologist performance assessment and the application of Computer Aided Detection (CAD) & Artificial Intelligence (AI) to breast cancer screening.
United Kingdom
Dr. Davies is Professor of Surgery – Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Her research focuses on cancer epidemiology and screening with a particular focus on the patient experience of and management of the downstream effects of screening detected and incidentally detected cancers.
She collaborated with the COMET Study Team on recruitment from 2018 – 2022, bringing together with COMET colleagues she began working with at the University of Bristol while a Fulbright Global Scholar Research grantee in 2017-18. Together, they brought to COMET the QuinteT Recruitment Intervention, an approach to trial recruitment that is well established in the U.K. but which is new to many outside the U.K. Dr. Davies will share details of these approaches and the research protocol that underpins them, which holds promise to support trials to reach recruitment targets, while optimizing informed consent and ensuring all eligible patients have the opportunity to hear about trials, increasing the likelihood of diversity in recruitment.
Netherlands
Prof. dr. Smidt collaborates with international principal investigators of comparable studies aiming to empower outcome and catalyze implementation.
She is further developing a breast cancer related prevention program. Lifestyle, like alcohol intake and BMI, has proven to highly impact breast cancer incidence as well as recurrence. By providing this knowledge to patients, they have the information to take something in their rollercoaster breast cancer era in their own hands. These patients are supported by dieticians, physiotherapists or lifestyle coaches, depending on the provided breast cancer treatment.

Matthew moved to Cambridge in 2007 after 19 years as Director of the Warwickshire Solihull and Coventry Breast Screening Service. At various times he was also Clinical Director for Radiology and Clinical Support Services. He was actively involved in Quality Assurance in the breast screening programme as West Midlands QA radiologist, the Association of Breast Surgeons Audit group and the National Evaluation group. He still regularly assists NHS England and NHS Improvement: Screening QA team.
President European Society of Breast Imaging 2008-2010.
His major research interest is optimisation of all stages of the breast cancer pathway from mammographic image production and display to trials to investigate limiting the side effects of current treatment of lower risk disease. His 137 peer reviewed publications has informed standard setting in image quality, radiology and surgery across the world. He has a long-standing interest in DCIS and is the Chief Investigator of LOw Risk dcIS trial.
